Mindfulness...But there's a mismatch. The child is not physically capable of supporting the skills and talents you had in your prior life. So when born, you begin to forget. Your first order of business is to learn how to operate your new machinery. This is a complicated business. It requires deep entanglement with matter and energy in the here and now. It fixes your charge in time and place, and your coupling to the past and future recedes. You forget that you were ever alive before. Until you become older, generally at the time of your majority, and can store enough energy and establish sufficient security to open yourself again to the spiritual. You begin to realize that you can't explain your skills in strictly causal terms. When exercising your mastery, things seem to happen all at once. The future seems to be obvious long before you have enough information to deduce its outcome. Intuition becomes a partner to reason, and you wonder… What is the meaning of it all? Why do bad things happen to good people? To give them an opportunity to learn not to be afraid. We all can come back again, and a moral sacrifice - made without fear and to the purpose of enabling others to grow - is a good will ticket to a better opportunity. But more importantly, there is reason to be cautious in working with the allies. They provide the means for us to manifest our will. If our dreams include fear and anger - powerful and primitive survival mechanisms - then the opportunities they provide us can go horribly awry. Perhaps people with bad karma come back as cockroaches so they can forget. But, to answer the initial question: we do the best we can to make things work. We try not to give in to our vices, but to express our virtues. We practice patience and compassion for those around us, creating good will that buffers us from the impulses to disorder emanating from immature personalities. And we take joy in life. Not the kind of joy consequential to others' indulgence of our whims, but a joy that lifts us up so that we can carry each other forward. |
